In this paper, I take up Damasio and Man's proposal, so as to reflect on the connection between their notion of homeostasis (as a biological, and now robotic characteristic), and phenomenological notions of mortality, in Heidegger (as a distinctly human characteristic) and Jonas (as an essential element of life itself, everywhere there is metabolism). The implementation of "soft robotics" will, they argue in sum, have transformative effects on the productivity of these machines, as value becomes an internally generated attribute of AI. In this way, Damasio and Man argue, machines can begin to become "self motivated," rather than merely taking on tasks that are externally imposed on them. In a recent article published in Nature: Machine Intelligence, "Homeostasis and soft robotics in the design of feeling machines" (2019), the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio and his collaborator, Kingson Man, propose that in order to take the next step in artificial intelligence design, what is needed is to imbue machines with a sense of their own "risk-to-self," or mortality.
